F-802.11P: A Fuzzy Enhancement for IEEE 802.11P in Vehicle-to-Everything Communications

Vehicle-to-Everything communications (V2X) are becoming increasingly popular as a solution for safer roads and better traffic management. One of the essential protocols in V2X is Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) protocol suite. DSRC includes IEEE 802.11p that operates at medium access control (MAC) physical (PHY) layers. Upon collision, MAC layer applies carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism randomly selects backoff time to re-check channel activity then retransmit. However, random selection may lead further packet collisions decrease utilization communication channel, which suffers from limited bandwidth first place. This paper proposes fuzzy model based on rational decision-making, we call F-802.11p, improve by limiting beacon messages use available bandwidth. A simulation study presents evaluation our work compared 802.11p. We deployed software two scenarios: Veins Framework map New Administrative Cairo Egypt. base comparison slots backoff, times into PHY busy time, total lost packets, generated/received messages. Simulation results show both have comparable back off, generated At same F-802.11p significantly outperforms received scenarios.
